Strohm has been awarded a subsidy of nearly €3.7 million from the Just Transition Fund (JTF)

3 July 2024

Strohm has been awarded a subsidy of nearly €3.7 million from the Just Transition Fund (JTF) for its project TCP for Hydrogen. TCP stands for Thermoplastic Composite Pipe, which is highly suitable for transporting hydrogen molecules and CO₂. These pipes are resistant to brittleness, flexible, and reelable, making them easy to transport, install, and remove. The materials are designed to have a lifespan of over 40 years due to their manufacturing process.

The European subsidy was presented by Jeroen Verwoort, Alderman of the Municipality of Velsen, who stated: "This subsidy will be used to develop, test, and qualify these composite TCP pipes for the transport of hydrogen and CO₂, both offshore and onshore. With this hydrogen and CO₂ transport solution, IJmond is further developing as a Green Energy Hub."

Importance of the TCP for Hydrogen Project

Offshore production of hydrogen contributes to the growing demand for green hydrogen. The advantages include cost-effective hydrogen molecule transport compared to electricity via cables, requiring less space for landing and installations on land, and suitability for long-term storage.

While large offshore hydrogen backbones will continue to use steel pipelines in the future, smaller diameter branches are less suitable due to hydrogen embrittlement, and installing steel pipelines offshore is costly. Reelable Thermoplastic Composite Pipe (TCP), produced in lengths of several kilometers, provides a solution for these applications.

Boosting Employment in IJmond

Strohm is already in full production of TCP pipelines used in the oil and gas industry. The TCP for Hydrogen project will contribute to growth with an additional 100 employees needed to support the energy transition, from machine operators to engineers, by training them to manufacture pipes for hydrogen transport.
